SARS-CoV-2: The Science of the Sequence

The COVID-19 pandemic has so far claimed more than 450,000 lives in the United States—one fifth of the total deaths worldwide. While vaccinations are ramping up, reports of new SARS-CoV-2 variants—in the U.K., South Africa, Brazil and so on—are raising alarms about the spread of more contagious, and potentially more virulent, versions of the virus. One year after Chinese scientists first posted the SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence, intense research is ongoing to better understand the biology of the virus and the spread of the pandemic. Genomic epidemiologists are tracking the introduction of the virus into different regions and solving the transmission puzzle.
In the next GEN Live, three experts discuss the ever-changing nature of SARS-CoV-2, the significance of new variants, advances in genomic surveillance, and the prospects for the course of the current pandemic.
